The month of October kicks off with our annual Blessing of the Animals. We celebrate this day on or near the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals and environment, sometimes called “the original Earth Day advocate.” Born in Italy around 1181-1182, Francis’ devotion to God was expressed through his love for all of God’s creation. He cared for the poor and sick, he preached sermons to animals, and praised all creatures as brothers and sisters under God.
What fun we have out in the Courtyard as people come with their beloved pets to receive a blessing. Some bring photos to post on the Memorial Board. And everyone is invited to bring donations of pet food for our local pet shelters.
For the past couple of years, COVID restrictions pushed us out of the Courtyard onto the sidewalk in front of the church. On Saturday mornings, many of our neighbors are out walking their dogs. I love to introduce myself, meet them and their dog, and ask if they’d like a blessing. What a joy to see their eyes light up. A blessing. A gift.
Free of charge. God’s love freely given, freely shared.
Church outside the walls! Let’s give thanks, share smiles all around, and show God’s love to folks all ‘round.
