ABOUT COMMUNITY MEAL
simple church hosts a monthly potluck at Family Place. A program of Upward Bound House, Family Place provides transitional housing and intensive wrap-around case management for homeless families with children in crisis. Traditionally, homeless shelters separate men and women; Family Place offers a unique model maintaining the family unit intact in their own apartment.
Community Meal is an opportunity to provide a delicious meal (served buffet style) for the families, allowing the parents an evening free from planning dinner, while hanging out with the children and youth making a simple craft or playing games. More importantly, Community Meal is a way for all who attend to be a part of a warm and accepting community.

OTHER FAMILY PLACE SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH FIRST UMC
The annual First UMC Angel Tree project in December provides the necessary home items such as towels, bedding, and cookwares for 21 apartment units. Families are then able take their items with them into their new homes once they have graduated from the program. For more information on this project contact the church office.
Every summer, the First UMC Sunday school children put their “Faith in Action” by collecting school supplies and assembling backpacks for the children of Family Place. For more info on how to contribute please contact Tricia Guerrero.
A long-time dream of the First UMC congregation came to life in the early ’90s when Rev. Don Shelby, church members, and staff focused the church’s mission on seniors and homeless families within this city. The Church partnered with Upward Bound House to raise money and lend its property for building state of the art housing and a subterranean garage. We continue on a daily basis serving this population and providing our congregation a place to volunteer that is near to our hearts.
