Sundays for Children

We believe that children’s faith is vital as they grow and to the life of the First UMC family. Come explore the many opportunities for your child’s spiritual formation including Sunday School, a monthly Family Devotional, Messy Church, and more.

Sunday Morning Schedule

9:30 a.m. Nursery Care is available on Sunday mornings in Room 204 of the Educational Building for children between the ages of 6 months and 2 years.
10 a.m. Children attend worship in the sanctuary with their families. Parents may leave children 6 months to 2 years with our capable nursery staff in Room 204 of the Education Building.
10:15 a.m. After the Children’s Message in worship, children proceed to their classrooms for Sunday School, which
concludes at 11 a.m. Parents with young children are welcome to worship from the Kids Zone in the narthex of the sanctuary.
11 a.m. Parents and children are invited to come to Coffee Fellowship in Simkins Hall in The Shelby Center after worship.

Parents are invited and encouraged to take an occasional Sunday off from formal worship, and to spend it with their child in Sunday School. Furthermore, Sunday School teachers will be sending children home with crafts, worksheets, and songs to share with their families. Please be encouraged to find out what your children are learning, and ask them about it. Let’s partner together to raise up a new generation to love and serve the
living God!

This year’s Sunday school teachers: Jamie Jones, Dot Plukas, Emily Plukas, Sandra Jones, Sue Heffner, Virginia Pelton, Janet Bogle, Mia Staaci.

Sunday School

We believe that children’s faith formation happens through a variety of experiences and styles of learning. For this reason, our Sunday School program is a rotational program consisting of Bible study and crafts, music and hand-bells, and monthly service projects.

The Sunday School Curriculum is called Deep Blue. We believe that one of the ways God works to give us hearts after Jesus Christ’s own heart is through the searching and study of Scripture. In Sunday School we try to empower kids with age-appropriate bible skills that will help them come to know God through Scripture for themselves.

Make a Joyful Noise
Children’s Church is a monthly gathering for children to learn about God and God’s loving activity in the world through singing, instruments and movement.

Faith in Action Sundays
Faith is more than a belief, it is an action. Once a month, all Sunday School children gather together as one class for a hands-on service project. Projects vary from crafty outreach such as making Christmas Cards for shut-ins, to community-focused projects such as gathering and donating school supplies for local students. This is an opportunity for children to reach out into their community and their world with grace and love.

Family Sundays

Children remain with their families for congregational worship for there is no Sunday school.  Worship activity packets for children can be found with the ushers.  Family Sundays usually occur around major holidays, such as Easter, Christmas, and Thanksgiving.

Other Opportunities for Children

Children’s Sabbath
Once a year, the children design and lead one of our 10 a.m. worship services. Children of all ages not only help write and lead the liturgy; they also preach and sing

Kids Zone, Narthex

Little one getting squirmy during worship? Although children are always welcome in the sanctuary sometimes they want a little more space.  The Kids Zone, stocked with toys and books, is a comfortable area for families to hear and see the service from the narthex, just outside of the sanctuary. Look for the Kids Zone sign. Ushers are available for assistance.

Coffee Fellowship

After service, stay for refreshments and fellowship in the Courtyard or Simkins Hall.

A changing table is available in the restroom across the hall from the Fireside Room kitchen. High chairs are also available.
