Westside Food Bank

Thank you for a successful Hunger Walk!

We celebrate the great turnout and community presence of First UMC during last Sunday’s Westside Food Bank Hunger Walk! 14 First UMC members came out and walked to help end hunger in our community, while many others walked on their own time, or donated to the team. Together we raised just over 3 thousand dollars, and, First UMC won the award for Top Fundraising Team! We thank you all!

Westside Food Bank’s 32nd Annual 5k Hunger Walk

First UMC is proud to support the Westside Food Bank’s 32nd Annual Hunger Walk!  Join team captains Russ Whittenburg and Martha Ross, and let’s continue to work together to end hunger in our communities by providing access to free nutritious food to all who need it. Every $1 donated will provide four meals to families in need of food.

After being virtual for the last two years, the Hunger Walk is scheduled to return to Santa Monica’s Ocean View Park (2701 Barnard Way) along the Ocean Front Walk.  Events begin at 12 noon, with the walk at 2 p.m.

A virtual version of the Walk will also run from Oct 8 – Oct 16. Those participating virtually will have multiple days to finish the 5K and wrap up on the same day as the in-person event. Virtual walkers can still make a team and fundraise — they’ll just be doing it on their own time in their own neighborhood!

The event is scheduled as follows:

  • 12 p.m. – Registration and check-in begin
  • 1 p.m. – Live entertainment (dance performance by The Pretenders Studio), activities, games, Family Fun Zone, raffle and awards ceremony
  • 2 p.m. – Walk starts
  • 3:30 p.m. – Beach Bash After-party (ticket purchase required for entry)

Westside Food Bank’s 32nd Annual 5k Hunger Walk: Sunday, October 16, runs from 12 noon – 3:30 p.m. after party

The Westside Food Bank is an important ministry partner with the First UMC Santa Monica congregation. Their work and mission: to end hunger in our communities by providing access to free nutritious food through food acquisition and distribution, and by engaging the community and advocating for a strong food assistance network. Last year they provided over 10 million meals and this year, we are dedicated to helping them continue their good work!

How can I participate in this ministry?
Pick up extra cans of food the next time you’re at the grocery store. Each Sunday we have bins located outside the Sanctuary to collect these donations for the Westside Food Bank. We also host seasonal food drives when the food bank is in need of particular food or goods.

Thanks to everyone who represented First UMC at the Westside Food Bank food sort day on Saturday, May 14, 2022! All of your volunteer work is greatly appreciated!
