Outreach & Missions

Together we can change lives and transform the world.

Angel Tree Project – Each year First UMC supports a local group of children and families by providing them with Christmas gifts, often much needed practical items as well as toys and clothing.

Alternative Christmas Fair is a way for individuals to support mission projects and programs in the community and around the world, by giving a financial gift in the name of a loved one. Share the SPIRIT of Christmas!  The Fair is held Sundays in December, after service, in Simkins Hall in The Shelby Center.  Sponsored by the Missions Council.

Communion Server Ministry – This ministry involves those who are not ordained clergy (laity) in bringing the bread and the grape juice (communion elements) to anyone who is unable to attend the worship service when communion is served (i.e. those who are hospitalized, home-bound, etc.). It requires some training and a limited time commitment for visitation and follow-up. If you are interested in participating in this ministry, please contact the church office.

Covenant Missionaries – First UMC supports two missionaries:

In Los Angeles, Lydia Templeton directs the Children, Youth and Family Collaborative – a nationally recognized organization serving over 2,500 disadvantaged youth in foster care and youth on probation. CYFC makes the connection between these youth and a caring community through partnerships with various organizations such as First UMC. CYFC utilizes a holistic approach to improve their educational outcomes and enhance vocational efforts as well as provide support to youth preparing to emancipate from the foster care system.

First UMC also supports Wesley Foundation Serving UCLA, ministering to college students, faculty, and staff.

Disaster Response & Relief – When disasters strike, First UMC responds.

Faith in Action – Faith is more than a belief, it is an action. On every 4th Sunday of the month (subject to change), the youth and children of First UMC put their Faith in Action, by working together during Sunday School to perform a gracious act of service. The project rotates between service for the church family, the local community, and our global community, as we learn what it means to be the hands and feet of Christ serving in the world.

Food Drives – Food is collected every Sunday to benefit the Westside Food Bank. Food bins can be found in the Sanctuary and church office.

The Church partnered with Upward Bound House to raise money and lend its property for building state of the art housing and a subterranean garage. We continue on a daily basis serving this population and providing our congregation a place to volunteer that is near to our hearts. Check out more info at www.upwardboundhouse.org.
