Together we can change lives and transform the world.
Angel Tree Project – Each year First UMC supports a local group of children and families by providing them with Christmas gifts, often much needed practical items as well as toys and clothing.
Alternative Christmas Fair is a way for individuals to support mission projects and programs in the community and around the world, by giving a financial gift in the name of a loved one. Share the SPIRIT of Christmas! The Fair is held Sundays in December, after service, in Simkins Hall in The Shelby Center.
Communion Server Ministry – This ministry involves those who are not ordained clergy (laity) in bringing the bread and the grape juice (communion elements) to anyone who is unable to attend the worship service when communion is served (i.e. those who are hospitalized, home-bound, etc.). It requires some training and a limited time commitment for visitation and follow-up. If you are interested in participating in this ministry, please contact the church office.
Covenant Missionaries – First UMC supports two missionaries: In the innercity of Los Angeles, Lydia Templeton directs the Children, Youth and Family Collaborative which provides mentoring and tutoring to youth in foster care. First UMC also supports Wesley Foundation at UCLA, ministering to college students.
Food Drives – Food is collected every Sunday to benefit the Westside Food Bank. Food bins can be found in the Sanctuary and Preschool.
Upward Bound House – A long-time dream of the First UMC congregation came to life in the early ’90s when Rev. Don Shelby, church members, and staff focused the church’s mission on seniors and homeless families within this city. The Church partnered with Upward Bound House to raise money and lend its property for building state of the art housing and a subterranean garage. We continue on a daily basis serving this population and providing our congregation a place to volunteer that is near to our hearts. Check out more info at www.upwardboundhouse.org.
Run or walk to end homelessness with Home Run for Kids. This 10K & 5K race is a great opportunity for kids, parents, and the community to work together to help solve family homelessness in Los Angeles. Join the First UMC team.. Read more.
Youth Service Project – Every summer the junior high and high school youth participate in a week of service. YSP serves in three different areas of the country: Appalachian Mountains, New Orleans, and on Native American Reservations in the Pacific Northwest.
