Chancel Choir Spring Concert

Sunday May 6, 2018 at 7:30 p.m., Sanctuary

First UMC Chancel Choir, and members of the Long Beach Chorale, with the Los Angeles Concert Orchestra will combine to present Kirke Mechem’s Songs of the Slave at the First UMC Sanctuary. Featuring Wayne Shepperd, bass baritone, singing the role of Frederick Douglass, and Zanaida Robles, soprano. Also, selected pieces from Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem featuring Alexandra Grabarchuk, mezzo soprano, will be performed. Dr. James E. Smith, conductor, Ty Woodward, organist.

Reception to follow in Simkins Hall.

Mid-Week RecitalsFREE concerts 

January through May – 12:10 p.m. Second Wednesdays of the month in the Sanctuary. Reception with the artist(s) follows each performance in the Fireside Room.  Read more..

Choir Recognition

Sunday May 20, 2018 during 10 a.m. Sanctuary Worship Service

Don’t miss First UMC’s annual Choir Recognition Sunday, when The Chancel Choir, The Children’s Church Choir, The Cherub Choir, and The Amadeus Handbell Choir will be recognized and featured during the service. Come and show your appreciation for the wonderful music these groups present during worship services throughout the year.

Lessons and Carols

During Advent – 10 a.m. Sanctuary Worship Service 
Scripture readings of the season interspersed with carols, sung by the congregation and Chancel Choir.

Lessons and Anthems

During Lent – 10 a.m. Sanctuary Worship Service
A beautiful and moving annual service of Lessons and Anthems. This is a solemn service, designed to prepare our hearts and minds for Holy Week. In word and music, we will remember the last days of Jesus’ life–his witness, his teaching, his faithfulness.
